STORIES FROM THE FIELD

From the Vice Chair

Detroit-Wayne-Oakland Tobacco-Free Coalition

I'm the Vice Chair of the Detroit-Wayne-Oakland Tobacco-Free Coalition. Our mission is to end tobacco addiction in the City of Detroit, Wayne County, and Oakland County, Michigan through the promotion of tobacco use prevention, cessation, and regulation.

Most recently we have been interested in pursuing local policies that ban the sale of tobacco products containing menthol and other added flavors. Before we began working with The Center for Black Health & Equity, we lacked the momentum to realistically achieve our long-term goals.

The Center has provided a strong scaffolding for us to build and empower our tobacco-free coalition. In-depth and inspiring training sessions have kept our group moving and looking forward. The quality of the material and support is very high.

We are now solidifying our strategic plans and taking steps toward them.

The Center has helped us focus our "eyes on the prize" and marshal our resources to make change.
